I recently bought P3, and I have to say I like P4 more because of the technical fixes they did.

I've only played 1 and 2.

I would skip 3 and go on to 4. Though I might just be spoiled by 4.

What exactly are different between the two?

Location. The battle system is a bit different. Instead of having the option of controlling all the party members in battle (P4) you are left up to the mercy of the AI's judgement (P3) which is stupid most of the time. Some other things in battle that changed got me annoyed, but they were pretty close and I dealt with it.
What really annoys me is the difference in dungeon exploration. P3 has many floors between each warp point and you can only go to floor that have those warp points. If you leave before you find a warp point (say, one floor away from one) you must start at the latest warp point you have and work your way up again. In P4, you can leave at any time (given you have the item or skill) and return to the highest floor you reached.
This wouldn't have bothered me as much if the enemies were fairer, but they can throw some douche bag enemies your way out of no where. I died so many times, I nearly broke my controller.
What I did like in P4 was the fact that they visit the location of P3 and you meet some of the characters. That was a nice touch. P3 has great characters, but since I was more interested in story than the annoyance of the battle system, I find it hard to get through. I still have to finish it.

Hmm, P3 sounds a little annoying. But I would play it before P4 because I don't feel right about playing games out of order, even if the order is out of order.

I played it out of order. If I had known that P3 would make an appearance in P4, I would have played in order, but I don't regret it.

Does P1 or P2 have anything in P3 or P4?

I don't know, I never played them. How are they?

They're pretty fun. I've never been really good at explaining games, so I can't say much about them.
But from what I've heard how P3 and P4 are they're different from those two.

Hm, I wonder. I really loved P4. I think it is my favorite game over Tales of Symphonia. I can't get enough of it.

I haven't really gotten a chance to play newer games, I am always a gen or two behind.

I understand that. I still play PS games. I don't care, nothing beats the classics. But, I do enjoy an occasional new game.

I don't even know where my NES is. I don't even have a SNES. It might still work if I hooked it up. I don't have the patience though.
